Rita's golf club covers
My only experience with golfing was when I was in my 20's I worked for a convention agency who would hire girls to model or host certain events. Most of the time we would go to Tampa, Key West, Ft. Lauderdale or Orlando to their hugest hotels and set up casino nights. We would man the blackjack tables and would have to dress up in sexy formal dresses . Sometimes we would work at theme parks, like Bush Gardens or Disney. One time, we had to dress up in Southern bell dresses with the hoops. Now that was an experience trying to sit down or go to the bathroom. That skirt just did not fit in the tiny stall. Oh me oh my.
One time at Disney we were asked to dress up in shorts and drive a golf cart with beverages to each of the holes where men were playing golf. It was very hot and I really didn't like it.
After I got my clubs, which of course were pink, I decided to make golf club covers for all of my clubs. I didn't personally like the standard ones that you could buy online. So this is what I liked. My clubs are from the wilson hope collection. I hope to one day get a better set, but this set has worked beautifully for me as a starter set. I cannot tell you how many hours I have spent in the back yard practicing. I not naturally gifted in sports so it takes me a lot longer than most gals to learn to hit a ball.
So I started with trying to make club covers for my irons.. After several attempts I got the right fit for these clubs. I machine embroidered the correct number for each club. About 6 months later I wanted to make a bag to carry all my stuff with me. I also made the light pink golf outfit...the logo on the skirt and top says pink is the new green. Then just yesterday I wanted to make a new golf skirt since I have put on a little more weight this year and that is the purple check shown above. I also decided to make a matching visor and golf shoe bag. Anyone that knows me knows that I like to match and also love any shade of pink or purple.
All this may not make me play better, but I sure feel better with it. There's something about pink that makes me feel good.

front and back side of Pauls quilt |
This past week I have been working on a quilt for my brother Paul. My brother loves the shows from the 70s especially the Monkees. I wanted to make him a quilt with some of his favorite shows. I was unable to get material that already had the logos printed on them. So I stewed on this for a couple of weeks. I came across several sites that made t shirt quilts. My brother has many t shirts of his favorite shows that he does not wear anymore.
So, I managed to talk him into giving them to me. I could not find enough t shirts to fill an entire queen size quilt, so I used a solid light grey block for every other block.I cut the tshirt blocks out one inch larger 15" and fused a lightweight interfacing to make the tshirt stable. I trimmed all those down to 14 inches. On the backside I used an assortment of blocks i put together from different cartoon materials i found at Joann's, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart. I cut those blocks 14 ". I made a 3 inch black sash on both sides of the quilt.
Then I thought about quilting them both together and when I laid them out on top of one another they were off by one inch...so I would not be able to quilt them both together...that is, front, batting and back...so I thought and thought and decided to make a duvet cover. I took the one that was one inch bigger and cut it down all around. I bought a 72 inch zipper, placed it at the top and then sewed up all the seams much like a huge zippered pillowcase. I also added snap tape on all sides of the duvet on the inside seam line corners the duvet. I did the same for the comforter. Then i laid the duvet inside out..attached all the snaps of the duvet to the comforter and flipped the comforter inside and zipped it up..I didn't like it.
So back to the drawing board. I fiinally decided to take the duvet apart at the seams...I took the top part, which was the tshirts and quilted that to an old sheet with batting in between. So only the top was quilted. Then I took the top part and laid it on top of the back part (the cartoon blocks) and stitched all the way around. I then bound it with the same grey used in the t shirt top part.
Paul's Magic Pillowcase
Paul and Rita at Disney 2011 |
I cannot believe how easy this is. One of my specialty services that I provide is making linen sheets for customers out of 100% linen. Linen is expensive these days and so to make a linen sheet set can be quite costly. For example, for a full size bed you will need 16 yds of linen. On the low side of pricing for 54 inch wide linen, at $10.00 a yd, you would pay $160.00 just for the material. But today I am not using linen I will be sewing with Mickey Mouse print cotton for my brother.
While I was standing in line at Joann fabrics waiting for my material to be cut an elderly lady asked me what i was going to be doing with the material. I told her I was going to make pillowcases for my brother. She asked me if i was going to use the tube method, and I had no idea what she was talking about. She began to explain it to me and i was fascinated. Today i looked up on Pinterest, the magic pillowcase and i couldn't believe how simple this was. Where has this tutorial been all my life?
So you will need
27 inches of the main fabric
9 inches for cuff2 inch strip of solid fabric for trim
I used linen for this pillowcase. I forgot to take pictures of the mickey mouse pillowcase as I sewed it, so I am using one of my linen pillowcases as an example.
After cutting out all the pieces above, trim off all the ends so they are the same length.
Open up the cuff and lay flat down with fold facing up.
Lay the main fabric (27 x 45) on top of the cuff with top ends meeting together
Lay the folded trim (2 inch) ( wrong sides together) on top of that with the folded edge away from the top All raw edges should be together at top
- Roll up the bottom edge of the main fabric toward the top until it passes the cuff. The cuff should be exposed now with a roll of fabric much like a rolled up shade
Take the bottom edge of the cuff and bring it over the roll until it meets the top of the layered fabric. Pin in place.
Sew a 1/4 seam.
Turn the pillowcase inside out by pulling on the inside of the tube. Press when all pulled out.
Bring sides together and sew sides together and now you have a finished pillowcase. It may take a few times doing this to remember all the steps.

Maternity hospital gown, burp cloths, nursing cover
I don't have any new recipes this week. I have been sewing for my daughter who is about to give birth. This is her first child and my first grandchild. So, this week I wanted to make her a maternity hospital gown that she could also breastfeed in. I found a free pattern online. I put snaps at the top of each shoulder. I used my new embroidery machine to embroider on the pocket. The baby's name is James...so I embroidered "for I know the plans I have for James...with little baby footprints below it..
I also made burp cloths from swaddler diapers. They are easy to make by buying fat quarters and cutting them down to fit the middle panel.
Next was this cute swaddler. It has velcro to fasten around the baby. There are 2 flaps that open up and the baby is placed down in the sack and swaddled in the cocoon.
And lastly a nursing cover that fastens around the neck with an adjustable band. Also added is boning in the center part so as to stiffen out the middle section so the mommy can look down easily at the baby and vice versa.
